The official start of summer arrives this week on June 21! Most people are eagerly awaiting a vacation but feel stressed with mounting tasks at work. How can you get away without feeling guilty? Embrace unplugging from the daily grind and get ready to enjoy time off while feeling productive!
Learn to Unplug and Feel Productive
- You’ll gain a different perspective. Being stuck in work routines takes away creativity yet taking time off can open up new pathways of thinking. Walk outdoors instead of on a treadmill, meditate instead of obsessing or pitch in with family where you usually bow out.
- Relationships may improve. You don’t have to be in a committed relationship to benefit from unplugging. Have you considered the relationship with the “you” that’s worn down by the day-to-day grind? Take time out for your desires outside work and reap the rewards of a renewed spirit and calmer mind.
- Plan ahead and knock out an extra project or two before you go. Cross items off your list the week before you’ll be gone to gain a feeling of accomplishment.
- Sleep easily. You’ll be a better person on and off the clock with quality sleep. Resist interruptions from your devices. Do yourself a huge favor on vacation by scaling way back on electronics.

Vacations are a great time to catch up on reading. Brain candy “beach books” are popular this time of year but I suggest something that will stick with you long after you return! Get the most benefit by opting for a true hard back book vs. reading on electronics. Here are a few favorites I refer to frequently:
